How to Choose the Right Specialty Department in a Chinese Hospital
Choosing the wrong department is one of the easiest ways to waste time in a Chinese hospital. Large hospitals may have many similar-sounding departments, and the registration desk may not have enough English to help.
Start from the body system and urgency
- Chest pain, severe breathing problems, stroke symptoms, major injury: emergency department.
- Fever, cough, stomach symptoms, dizziness, general illness: general internal medicine or relevant specialty.
- Skin rash, allergy, acne, moles: dermatology.
- Eye pain, vision change: ophthalmology.
- Ear, nose, throat symptoms: ENT.
- Bone, joint, muscle injury: orthopedics.
Common mistake
Foreign patients often choose a famous department name instead of the department that matches the symptom. A top cancer hospital is not useful for a simple fever. A famous tertiary hospital may be too crowded for a minor problem.
