Direct Billing vs Pay and Claim in China
Foreign patients often assume insurance means the hospital will bill the insurer directly. In China, that depends on the hospital, department, insurer, plan, and whether the visit is pre-approved.
Direct billing
The hospital bills the insurer directly and you may pay only a deductible, co-pay, or excluded items. This is more common in international hospitals, private clinics, and some international departments.
Pay and claim
You pay the hospital first, keep documents, and submit a claim to your insurer later. This is common in ordinary public hospital visits and many outpatient situations.
Before the visit, ask
- Does this hospital accept my insurer for direct billing?
- Does direct billing apply to ordinary outpatient, international department, emergency, inpatient, or only some services?
- Do I need pre-authorization?
- Which documents are required for reimbursement?
