Hospital QR Codes in China: What to Scan and What to Avoid

In a Chinese hospital, QR codes are normal. You may scan one to book, check in, pay, find a department, complete a questionnaire, view a report, or follow the hospital’s official account. The risk is not that QR codes exist. The risk is scanning the wrong one when you are tired, anxious, and trying not to miss your turn.

QR codes that are usually expected

Codes printed on official hospital posters, counters, self-service machines, or department signs.
Codes shown on your own registration, payment, or report slip.
Codes inside the hospital’s verified WeChat account or official app.
Codes provided by staff at a registration, cashier, outpatient service, or international department desk.

QR codes to slow down on

A code sent privately by someone you met in a WeChat group.
A code from a person claiming they can get you a faster appointment for a fee.
A payment code in a personal chat, especially before the hospital confirms the appointment.
A code that opens a page with a different company name, different hospital name, or no clear identity.
A code asking for passport images, insurance cards, diagnosis records, or payment before explaining who receives them.

Before you scan, check the setting

A QR code on a hospital wall is different from a QR code sent by an unknown helper. If you are not sure, show it to the information desk and ask: is this the hospital’s official code?

If the code leads to payment

Pause for ten seconds. Check the payee name, amount, purpose, and whether the payment is going to the hospital or to a service provider. A hospital fee, platform fee, interpreter fee, and facilitator fee are not the same thing.

Ask what the payment is for.
Ask whether you will receive an official hospital invoice.
Keep the payment screenshot.
Do not pay a large deposit to a personal account without written confirmation from the hospital.
If a refund is promised, ask where it will return and when.

If the code asks for medical records

Ask who controls the page and how the records will be used. A hospital portal, international department upload link, and commercial facilitator form have different privacy implications. Do not upload passport copies, pathology, scans, insurance cards, or sexual health and mental health records unless you understand who receives them.

What to save after scanning

The page name and account name.
Appointment or payment confirmation.
Patient number or order number.
Refund or cancellation rule.
Contact information if the page fails later.

When to stop and ask for help

Stop if the page is asking for money you do not understand, if the hospital name does not match, if the page will not accept your passport, if the amount changed, or if a stranger is rushing you. In a hospital, there is usually a human route somewhere: registration window, cashier, outpatient service center, international office, department nurse station, or information desk.
